Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which lymphatic fluid builds up in the body’s tissues because the lymphatic system is damaged, underdeveloped, or unable to drain properly. It most commonly causes persistent swelling in an arm or leg but can affect other areas of the body.
Our Story
Our journey into lymphedema care is both professional and deeply personal. In 2023, Dr. Ryan and Emilee Vandervecht welcomed their first son, who was born with amniotic band syndrome and developed lymphedema as a result. Since then, they have experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating the healthcare system and accessing appropriate care for a lifelong condition.
While both Ryan and Emilee had witnessed the impact of lymphedema throughout their healthcare careers, caring for their son gave them a new and deeply personal perspective on the physical and emotional challenges it can bring. This experience inspired them to create a clinic that helps address gaps in lymphedema care within their community. Dr. Ryan became certified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and is currently only the second chiropractor in Ontario with this certification, as well as an ADP-certified compression garment fitter. Emilee brings her expertise as a registered social worker and psychotherapist to provide emotional support and counselling for individuals and caregivers navigating life with lymphedema. Together, they hope to improve access to comprehensive care by offering complementary services in one location, supporting patients not only in managing their lymphedema, but in living well with it.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized therapy that uses light, rhythmic movements to encourage the flow of lymphatic fluid and help reduce swelling. It may be beneficial for individuals living with lymphedema, including swelling related to cancer treatment, surgery, injury or chronic health conditions.
Dr. Ryan Vandervecht is certified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), and MLD treatment can be billed under chiropractic care through eligible extended health benefits.
Compression Garments
Compression garments are an important part of managing lymphedema. A properly fitted garment applies controlled pressure to the affected area, helping prevent fluid from accumulating and supporting the results of manual lymphatic drainage. Each patient is carefully measured to ensure the garment provides the appropriate fit, comfort and level of compression.
Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
As a certified Assistive Devices Program (ADP) fitter, Dr. Ryan and his team can assess and measure patients for medical compression garments and help eligible Ontario residents navigate the ADP application and funding process. By offering manual lymphatic drainage, compression-garment fitting and ongoing guidance in one location, our clinic provides convenient, coordinated support for the long-term management of lymphedema.
Counselling
